колокол.

Белый монах
уединенный один,
стережет.

Узкий утес —
врановый врез.

Луна ему
тени не бросит.

Мою жену и дитя.
В соломенной шляпе
кошу.

Ветер косит цветы:
голову Centaurea,
голову Ephedra,
голову Althaea,
голову Trapa natans,
голову Muscari.

Поющий перепел
над могилой.

Kuromatsu-dera no Shujin
(Prisoner of the Black Pine Temple 黒松寺の囚人)

At night the sea rejects flesh —
a shoal, the salted offering
to the birds.

Empty temple, remote,
the white brothers' long corridors.

The old demon will not leave,
the threshold not to be crossed —
the burning line of the prescription.

Without hope
with the dawns, disturbs
the unblinking
bell.


Jīnrō
(The Werewolf 人狼)

When in the capital a puppy was burned,
one adorned with a necklace, the other—
with care.

The white monk,
the solitary one,
keeps watch.

Narrow cliff —
raven rift.

The moon casts him
no shadow.


Kasa* (笠)

Once master Kokō
was asked, what is "Nothing-in-potency"?
— Wooden lambs leap from fire.

What is mown?
My wife and child.
In a straw hat
I mow.

Wind mows the flowers:
head of Centaurea,
head of Ephedra,
head of Althaea,
head of Trapa natans,
head of Muscari.

Singing quail
above the grave.
